The mansion echoed with the crash of metal on metal and Demencia’s cackling as the Doctor once again tried and failed to contain her mayhem.

Alone in his office, Black Hat listened with a scowl.

In the past, he had had more competent minions. Ruthless, single-minded, and efficient, they had carried out his orders flawlessly. Or died trying.

The current rabble were barely effective.

But, he had known centuries of competency. It was productive, profitable, and… predictable.

Somewhere, something shattered, and the bear wailed.

He had thought when he kept this lot that the depths of idiocy were the only surprises left to him. And, he was sure he would plumb even those depths and tire of them soon enough.

But, for now, he endured the endless mediocrity.

Besides…

With a fanged smile, he willed himself to the source of the chaos.

At least he never tired of inflicting terror.
