Chapter One

“Dr. Sinian, come look at this,” Randal called.

Dr. Sinian scooted herself over to Randal, frozen from the Antarctica winds. “My, this crack is huge.” Dr. Sinian kneeled down and examined the crack.

“It looks like something melted the crack.” Randal kneeled down by Dr. Sinian.

Steam rose from the crack, like ice was being melted.

“But, I don’t know how the ice could melt so quickly.” Dr. Sinian rubbed her chin as she thought.

“Could it be earth’s eternal heat?” Randal asked.

“It could be. I just don’t see how that much heat could get to the surface that fast.” Dr. Sinian pushed herself up off the frozen ground.

Randal followed, accidentally knocking a chunk of ice into the crack.

The sun was hidden behind clouds of darkness, so it was almost impossible to see down the crack. The two listened to the piece of ice knock against the wet sides of the melting ice. The ice stopped knocking and sounded like it hit something fleshy.

“What was that?” Randal asked Dr. Sinian.

Before she could answer, the ground shook violently, knocking over their tents and buildings.

Dr. Sinian and Randal gasped at the figure that rose from the crack. She rose up to a giant height of thirty-five feet. Her scales shimmered in what little light there was.

“Run!”

The two took off like bullets.

The beast hissed and dove back in to the frozen ground. She cut through the ice like a hot knife through butter. The spikes on her back worked in over time to get through the harsh environment.

“Did we lose it?” Randal asked as he came to a stop.

Dr. Sinian came to a halt. “Looks like it,” she said as she put her hands on her knees. She took in deep breaths.

“Wait, what’s that?” Randal pointed to puffs of snow coming up off the ice. One right after another, going right to them.

“It’s the creature, run!”

Dr. Sinian and Randal ran off into the frozen desert with the monster right on their tails.

The monster under the frozen ground felt the running footsteps of the two. Running wouldn’t get rid of the creature but only encourage her to follow. Even if she couldn’t feel Dr. Sinian and Randal, she could seek them out by their body heat. There was nowhere they could hide.
