Unexpected Surprise Part 3 Chance tried to concentrate on his work but his mind was on one thing, and that was Callie. She had been sick every morning for the past two weeks. He had finely convinced her, with the help of her sister, to see a doctor. He had asked her to call him when she was done. 'When is she going to call?' he thought. Just then, he heard the phone ring. Jumping up to get it, he hit his head on the hood of the car he was working on. "!@#$%^&*!!." Jake heard the phone ring and picked it up. "Hello, Chance and Jake's Body Shop. How may I help you?" "Hi Jake, is Chance there?" "Sure, Callie - one minute. Chance, Callie is one the phone." Dropping his wrench, he made a b-line for the office. Grabbing the phone from Jake's paw, he spoke into it. "Callie, what is the verdict?" "Chance, I think you should sit down." "Don't give me that bull %^&* . Tell me what's wrong!" "Chance, you're going to be a father." It might have been a good thing for him to be sitting down because just then he fainted. Hearing a loud thud come from the office, Jake ran into it, expecting to find the chair broken. "God, Chance, what happened?!" "I'm going to be a father," was all he could say. Bending over, Jake put Chance's arm over his shoulder and helped him into the chair. "Hello, Chance... Chance?" Picking the phone up from the floor, Jake gave it to Chance. "Callie, are you still there?" "Yes." "Tell me what you just said was real and not just some dream." "It's the truth, Chance." "YEEEEEEEES!" Chance shouted - a sound which could have been heard from the other side of the salvage yard. "Oh, Callie, I love you so much! "When are you due?" "The doctor said about December 31st. Look, Chance, I got to go. We'll talk more tonight. Love ya." "I love you too, Callie - bye." "Bye, Chance." "What was that about?" Jake asked. "Callie and I are going to have a kitten," he stated proudly. "Well, congratulations," Jake said. Suddenly, the phone started ringing. Stepping back inside the office, Chance answered it. "Hello, Chance and Jake's Body Shop - how may I help you?" "Yo, Chance! Hi, it's Tim - is Jake there?" "Sure, one sec. Jake, your brother is on the phone." Running over to the office, Jake took the phone from Chance. "Hey, bro." "Jake, you have to get over to MegaKat General." "Why?" "Chris has been in a car crash. Sue has called Mom already, but, Jake, the doctor doesn't think she'll make it." "I'll be there as soon as I can!" Hanging up the phone, Jake ran for the door. "Hey, where are you going? Chance asked, seeing his friend running for the door. "MegaKat General - Chris's been in a car accident, and she's not doing so good." Jake jumped onto his motorcycle, not bothering to put on his helmet, and started for MegaKat General. Running inside, Jake looked for his family. "Jake, over here." Turning around, Jake saw his older brother, Tim. "How is she?" he asked. "Not so good. The doctor says that if she lives till 6:00, it would be a miracle. You know it's ironic." "How?" "She was going over to see you and bring Max." "Is he okay?" "Yes, he has a couple of cuts, but nothing too bad." "Thank God." Entering the waiting room, Jake spotted the rest of his family. "Jake, thank God you're here," Mrs Clawson said, giving her son a hug. "Hi Mom," Jake said returning her hug. Looking at her, he could tell she had been crying. "Has the doctor told you anything yet?" No, they haven't," Sue said, walking over. She was carrying a sleeping Max. "They said just to wait." Three hours later Chance and Callie had come to the hospital to try to help comfort their friend. Callie even volunteered to take Max home saying she was going to need the practice. It was about 3:00 AM when someone came. "I'm looking for the family of Chris Clawson?" "We are they," Tim said. "I'm sorry to inform you that, at 2:56 AM, Chris Clawson passed away." "No...," Tim said. "It can't be." Mrs. Clawson cried on Callie's shoulder. "Um... According to her living will, she stated that, if she should die before her son was eighteen, his legal guardian will be Jake Clawson. I'm sorry for your loss." Jake couldn't believe it. In just under five minutes he had lost a sister and gained a son. "Jake, if you don't want to take care of him, Alex and I will," Sue said. "No, Chris left him in my care and that is what I'm going to do." "Okay then," she said, "We'll take care of him until you get things ready." "Thanks, Sue." "Jake, if you want the rest of the week off, you can have it," Chance said. "No, I need the work to get my mind off of this, but thanks."
